Financial Literacy Workshop

The Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the Committee for Promotion of Financial Literacy, University of Delhi organized a workshop on “Financial Literacy: Prosperity and Wealth” on 22nd June 2023. Prominent speakers and resource persons at the workshop included Dr. R.P. Tulsian (Chairman, Committee for Promotion of Financial Literacy), Prof. Amit Kumar Singh, (Department of Commerce), and Shri Suryakant Sharma, a senior consultant at AMFI and the former DGM of SEBI.

Department Societies: In addition to classroom teaching, the department strives to educate its students holistically by exposing them to leadership and entrepreneurship through its many societies,. viz. Commerce Association, Marketing Society, 180 Degree Consulting and Ardent. This year all the four societies of the Department organized their Annual Fests under a common umbrella – COMMFEST 2024.

Details of the activities conducted during the year by all these societies are as follows:

COMSOC: The Commerce Association

(Convenor: Ms. Leela Joshi; Co-Convenor: Ms. Manju Tanwar)

  1. Commerce Association Alumni Relationship Program (CAARP): Organised its first Alumni Relationship Program (CAARP) on 26th August 2023. The panel included the esteemed alumni of the society and they addressed the freshers on various issues including their career choices and other related endeavors. 
  2. Adwitiya – Annual  Flagship Event of Commerce Association: Eighth Edition of Adwitiya- Hunar aur Jazbe ka Sangam, a talent-show for the specially abled, was  organized on 4th November 2023, with an enthusiastic presence of over 200 audience. The event was graced by Mr. Dependra Pathak, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order Division as Chief Guest and Shri Rajendra Singh Ji as Guest of Honor.
  3. Contrivance – The Case Study Competition: Ninth Edition of Contrivance was organized on 14th March The event had an active participation of over 500 participants. The theme of this year’s event was- “Navigating Strategic Alliances: Elevation through Collaborative Mergers”.
  4. Uddayam – The Annual Commerce Fest celebrated its fifteenth edition on April 26–27, The event saw the participation of approximately 1500 participants from various colleges competing in 4 different competitions namely- ResQ Bid, Mad Men Marketing, Rogue Trader and Estate Enigma, challenging and testing their skills and acumen in the field of commerce. Designed to challenge and inspire the brightest minds, Uddayam offers a platform for students to showcase their talents, sharpen their skills and unlock their potential through a series of dynamic competitions.
  5. Commerce Association website launched: In the 15th edition of Uddayam, COMSOC has successfully launched its official website as https://www.comsocsbsc.in

Webinar & Panel Discussion

Following webinars & panel discussion were conducted during the year:

  1. A webinar on Actuarial Science was organised on 20th October 2023, in collaboration with IMS.
  2. Panel discussion on “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Different Fields of Commerce” was hosted on 17th October 2023, with Mr. Rishabh Nag, Atul Kulshreshtha, Mr. Ashwini Anand Pillutla and Mr. Akshay Bansal as the Panelists, The discussions revolved around AI’s role in startups, customer service and financial inclusion, emphasizing the continued importance of human analysis of AI-generated data. The seminar provided a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted realm of AI, and its applications across various industries, and offered valuable insights for the attending audience.

ARDENT: The Tech and Analytics Society

(Convenor: Dr. Nisha Gupta; Co-Convenor: Ms. Neyati Ahuja)

  1. FUSION 2.0: a fun filled event where participants were engaged in enlightening discussions, creative workshops and the activities which encouraged personal growth and introspection.
  2. Workshop on  Artificial   Intelligence Workshop: Mr. Rahul Menon, a seasoned public speaker who illuminated the audience on AI’s pivotal role across diverse industries and the intricacies of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). It was an enlightening journey ranging from unravelling the mysteries of machine learning to decoding the safeguarding innovation.
  3. AVISHKAAR ’24 – The Annual Fest: Avishkaar was organised on 26th -27th April 2024, encompassing events such as AI Cryptic Hunt, LA Bourse- Beat the Street and Creator’s Meet. The participants had an immersive experience and deeper understanding into the world of Technology, Finance and Content Creation.
  4. Live Projects were taken up with WISEFINSERV comprising a Team of 13 members from ARDENT SBSC and With IMPLEMENTORS having Team of 21 members from ARDENT SBSC.

MARKSOC: The Marketing Society

(Convenor: Dr. Ranjana Thakur; Co-Convenor: Dr. Saher Syed)

  1. Markade O: the promotional event of the society, was held on 26th August, 2023 with the participation of around 300 students. Major activities included wristwatch sampling stall, game booths, engaging contests like ‘Pictionary‘ and ‘Guess the Logo/Tagline‘. The event received generous support from gifting sponsor Budweiser ‘BINGE THE RING‘, an activity that encouraged the students to explore the campus and interact with peers.
  2. Orientation Ceremony of the Society was held on 4th September 2023 to introduce incoming freshers to the core values, objectives and activities of the society.
  3. LinkedIn & Cold-Calling Workshop was conducted on 18th October 2023 for the members of the Live Project and External Relations Department. It offered practical training in vital areas of Marketing and External Relations.
  4. A Canva workshop was held in collaboration with the College Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) in the month of Ms. Heena Sheikh, the creator of Growthaholics and a renowned industry expert, gave the participants an insight into her vast experience and proficiency in visual storytelling.The workshop offered valuable learning opportunities in digital design.
  5. The annual article writing competition “Articulate O” was hosted on 17th February 2024 to showcase participants’ competence in marketing-related themes.
  6. Marktalks were organised through various coordinated sessions and interviews with marketing industry. In total four online and one offline session were held in the series. Dr. Sukriti Sekhri, a distinguished PhD holder in Marketing from IIM Ahmedabad and Mr. Vinayak Gautam, an entrepreneur and an expert in product marketing & financial analysis, shared their real-world experiences and insights with the students.
  7. The Annual Fest ELIXIR’s promotional event, held on 26th April 2024.
  8. Live Projects: Four live projects were initiated during the year, in collaboration with prominent organizations, each aimed at providing practical knowledge and operational insights to partnering with Unnati, Rrayze Business Solutions, SocioEZ, and ZXY Marketing, participants engaged in diverse verticals such as content curation, design, outreach, HR, business development, social media marketing, sales, and outreach. These projects facilitated hands-on experience in various aspects of marketing, including promotional activities, social media management, content creation, and client outreach.

180 DC: The 180 Degrees Consulting Society

  1. The society worked on 6+ live projects in collaboration with NGOs such as Seva Aur Sahyog, TeacFirst Foundation, Niveda Foundation, Fauji Ke Alfaaz, PACT, Pyaare foundation to name a few. 180 DC SBS College excels in Fundraising, Market Research, Social Media Marketing, Branding, Business Strategy, and Volunteer Retention.
  2. Published 7+ informative research reports such as 30-minute Road to profitability, The Indian 5 Great Revolution, Economics of Layoffs, etc.
  3. Mentorship Sessions were organised throughout the year, conducted by consultants from leading firms in the industry, including the MBB and Big 4. These sessions have provided invaluable insights, guidance, and networking opportunities to the members by helping them gain a deeper understanding of the corporate world and develop essential skills for their future
  4. 180 DC has made significant strides in enhancing its social media through strategic content creation, online engagement and regular updates of activities and achievements, society has successfully built a vibrant online community. 
  1. Inaugral Edition of 180 Impact Genesis, the Annual Fest of the society was organised on 26th April. 1st day had a strategy-based case competition, Arena 180, which received over 800 registrations nationwide, with the final offline round having seven finalist teams from Delhi University. 2nd day featured the launch of the Casebook, a comprehensive collection of case studies and solutions. Another event on the day included a networking mixer with over 45 participants from different consulting branches across various universities and colleges in Delhi. These events showcased the society’s dedication in fostering the innovation and social impact, solidifying its role as a catalyst for positive change.

  • The Economics Society’s Orientation session in September 2023 engaged 100+ students across various disciplines, introducing them to the recruitment process and addressing their queries.
  • A Movie screening of ‘Too Big to Fail’ delved into the 2008 US Financial Crisis, accompanied by a quiz.
  • An Eco-Visit to Gandhi Ashram intertwined economic and historical perspectives, offering a unique learning
  • The International Trade Data Workshop by Mr. Vipin Kumar aimed to enhance students’ skills in analysing trade data and policy-making.
  • A call for articles competition garnered entries from 300+ participants from prestigious institutions, leading to the publication of Arthanaya 2.0, focusing on ‘Rupee Going Global’ with insightful informations.
  • Lastly, the Economics Baithak fostered economic inquiry through book reviews and intellectual Econotize 2024 is planned in May 2024 with the goal to promote a deeper understanding of economic principles and foster intellectual discourse among students which is a source of excitement for the students every year.
  • Under the Special Economics Lecture Series, the Department of Economics organised special lectures on important topics in the domain of economics from and beyond the prescribed course curriculum of the University.
  • In this academic year, the following three special lectures were organised:
  • Lecture (in hybrid mode) by Prof. Lekha S. Chakraborty, Professor, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi, titled ‘Fiscal Policy for Gender Equality.’ was organised on on August 24, 2023.
  • Lecture by Dr. Pratap Mohanty, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Indian Institute of Technology (Roorkee) was organised on October 10, 2023, on ‘Economic Impact of COVID-19-induced Lockdown on Rural Households’.
  • Lecture by Prof. Pulin B. Nayak, Professor (Retd.), Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi organised on November 2, 2023, on the topic ‘A Reconsideration of Gandhian ’.
 
 
Arthshodh – Research Cell of Economics Department

Established in April 2023, Arthshodh, the Research Cell of the Department strives to foster research collaboration among students across all departments of the college. One of the major achievements of the cell was to conduct an extensive all-India primary survey to assess the educational impacts of the Covid 19 pandemic. The survey was conducted online and the research findings point towards significant negative effects of the pandemic on learning outcomes and mental health of undergraduate students. Additionally, students have been conducting extensive research using macroeconomic data sets, providing exposure to pan-all India and countrywide data sets.

 

Explorify: Research Lecture Series

A series of online lectures were conducted by faculty members of our college to inculcate research skills, to develop interest and awareness about research among students, and to develop their research acumen. Details of these sessions are as follows:

  • A comprehensive workshop on research methodology was conducted for undergraduate students on the 7th November, 2023. The session was led by Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and Nahid Parveen, Assistant Professors in the Department of Economics. The aim was to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for conducting research effectively. This workshop served as a stepping stone for students embarking on their research journey, equipping them with the necessary tools to navigate the complex landscape of academic inquiry.
  • The Research cell organised an Online Paper Presentation event on 4th April, Witnessing a participation of more than 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students from esteemed colleges all over India. The event concluded in a total of 4 technical sessions with the themes: “Macroeconomic Policy”, “Environmental Policy”, “Role of AI in Social Sector” and “Contemporary Issues in World Economy”. Prof. Vijay Vir Singh, Vice Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University, was the Chief Guest of the event.

Events

The department of Environmental science at the college is responsible for teaching various courses based on environmental science at undergraduate level. Some of the activities conducted by faculty members during the year are as follows:

  • Walk in the campus to study bio-diversity and its importance.
  • Special lecture by Dr. Markus Leuenberger, University of Bern, Switzerland on “Climate Change, sustainability, and Career Opportunities”.
  • Visit to the Aravali Biodiversity Park, Vasant Vihar visit with 1st year AEC students.

Bricolage: The Literary Society

The Department of English organised various workshops and lecture series in which eminent personalities and outstanding orators helped the students venture into their fields with a multidisciplinary approach.

The Seminar and Conference Committee, operating under the auspices of Bricolage, the esteemed literary society of the college, proudly inaugurated its lecture series on October 11, 2024. Dr. Vikram Singh Thakur, Assistant Professor at the School of Letters, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, delivered an enlightening discourse entitled “Shakespeare and Indian Theatre.”

On November 10, 2024, the Committee organised an engaging online lecture. The esteemed speaker, Dr. Divya Dwivedi, Associate Professor at IIT Delhi, captivated audiences with her presentation titled “De-canonizing Theory, Junũn-izing Canon.” The virtual platform facilitated widespread participation, fostering intellectual exchange beyond physical boundaries.

  • Seminar titled “Dalit Writing as an Alternative Literary Historiography of ” was held on 6th March 2024. Esteemed scholar Prof. Raj Kumar, from the Department of English, University of Delhi, delivered a thought-provoking discourse, attracting a diverse audience keen on exploring alternative narratives in literary discourse.
  • An Inter-Department Poetry Competition in accordance with Viksit Bharat 2047 took place on 6th March on the theme of “Plural Cultural Heritage”, which encompassed the diversity of our rich Indian heritage.
  • The much-awaited department fest, Epiphaneia ’24 had a lot of events for students of all discipline, among the many events which took place, Litrivia was the most popular one, where students of the English Department tested their knowledge of Literature. Short-film Competition, Creative Writing Competition, Book Cover Designing and a Workshop on Screenwriting, were the events that saw large participation of students from various colleges.
  • Professor Sydney R. Robeiro’s idea of a one- act play with a rolling trophy came to fruition on the 29th of April. He has started this competition in memory of his uncle Sir John Leonard Breathtaking one-act plays from different colleges of University of Delhi enamored the stage and took the audience in a roller-coaster journey of emotions with life-like characters, elaborate settings and immaculate performance by the students. The competition was held at C.D. Deshmukh Auditorium, India International Centre.

 

       

Events

  • The 17th Volume of annual magazine “Landscape” with the Theme: Geo- Environmental Hazards and Disasters was published by the Department of Geography.
  • The department organised its annual fest Vasundhara, with the theme “Earth in Pixels – Exploring GeoAI’s Impact on Geography”. The fest was graced by the presence of Chief Guest Prof. Tejbir Singh Rana. The program comprised five distinct events including GEOQUORUM (Debate Competition), GEOBIZ (Business Plan Competition), INTELLECTUS (Quiz Competition), GLOBESHOTS (Online Photography Competition), and GEOGRAPHIKOS (Poster Making Competition).

 

  • A Field Survey was undertaken at the banks of Yamuna River, Okhla. This Field visit was conducted to study Delhi Floods 2023 for the Disaster Management Based Project work course of semester VI students during February 21-25, The areas covered were Jagatpur, Majnu ka Tila, Civil Lines, Yamuna Bazar, Yamuna Bank metro station area, Okhla.
  • Field survey in Gujarat was organised for the students of semester VI between 28nd of March to 3rd April 2024. The topic of the Fieldwork was “Assessing the impact of the Biparjoy cyclone in the Western Coastal “
  • The Department of Geography organised the field work trip at Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), Delhi for the students of IV semester on 15th April The topic of the Fieldwork was “Recent development in Agriculture Research”.

Events

  1. अभिमुखीकरण कार्यक्रम: हिंदी साहित्य सभा, हिंदी विभाग, हिंदी भाग्य मास्टर हावर्डिय (दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय) में हिंदी प्रतिष्ठा के नागरिक विद्यार्थियों द्वारा 16/08/2023 को उनका पदभार ग्रहण कराया गया। उनके लिए एक उद्घाटन समारोह आयोजित कर उनका अभिनंदन किया गया। कार्यक्रम में विद्यार्थियों को विश्वविद्यालय की विभिन्न गतिविधियों के बारे में जानकारी दी गई। विद्यार्थियों को सजन हिंदी साहित्य सभा के बारे में बताया गया कि हिंदी विभाग की सजन हिंदी साहित्य सभा किस प्रकार अपना कार्य करती है तथा इस सभा में सदस्यों की क्या भूमिका होती है।
  1. व्याख्यान: साजन, हिंदी साहित्य सभा द्वारा 22 नवंबर, 2023 को ‘कहानी और समाज’ विषय पर व्याख्यान आयोजित किया गया। इस कार्यक्रम के मुख्य वक्ता सत्यनारायण पूजा (दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय) के डॉ. प्रवीण कुमार थे। अपने व्याख्यान में डॉ. प्रवीण कुमार ने कहानी और समाज के बीच के गैर-अनुशासनात्मक संबंध पर गंभीर विचार करते हुए बताया कि किस तरह की कहानी समाज को न केवल सजाती है बल्कि बनाती भी है, वहीं दूसरी ओर उन्होंने हिंदी कहानी के कई संदर्भों को ध्यान में रखते हुए बताया कि किस तरह का समाज कहानी को रचनात्मक जीवन प्रदान करता है।
  1. कार्यशाला: हिंदी साहित्य सभा ने 3 अप्रैल, 2024 को ‘स्नातक के बाद करियर विकल्प’ विषय पर कार्यशाला आयोजित की। कार्यशाला भगवंत मस्जिद विश्वविद्यालय के हिंदी करियर विभाग के प्रोफेसर अतानी कुमार के मार्गदर्शन में आयोजित की गई। इस अवसर पर प्रोफेसर अतानी कुमार ने अपने व्याख्यान में हिंदी के छात्रों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करते हुए रोजगारपरकता के बारे में बात की। उन्होंने कहा कि हिंदी विषय से स्नातक करने वाले छात्रों के लिए रोजगार के कई क्षेत्र और अवसर हैं। इस संबंध में उन्होंने छात्रों के समक्ष रोजगार से संबंधित क्षेत्रों की एक लंबी सूची प्रस्तुत की और इससे संबंधित टिप्स भी दिए।
  1. आगाज-ए-खैरी, 2024: साजन, हिंदी साहित्य सभा द्वारा 1 मई, 2024 को हिंदी विभाग का वार्षिक उत्सव ‘आगाज-ए-खैरी’ आयोजित किया गया। यह कार्यक्रम दो चरणों में आयोजित किया गया। पहले चरण में काव्य समीक्षक विजयेंद्र नारायण साही की जयंती के उपलक्ष्य में ‘साही जी का काव्य व्याख्यान सह काव्यपाठ’ का आयोजन किया गया। इस कार्यक्रम के मुख्य व्याख्याता हिंदी के प्रख्यात लेखक-आलोचक प्रोफेसर सर गोपेश्वर सिंह थे। उन्होंने वरजयदेव नारायण साही के साहित्यिक योगदान को व्यापक रूप से सभी के सामने प्रस्तुत किया। इस कार्यक्रम का दूसरा वर्ष युवा आवरण उज्ज्हि काख था। कार्यक्रम के दूसरे चरण में दो प्रतियोगिताएं आयोजित की गईं- I. कविता पाठ प्रतियोगिता और  II. साहसिक प्रश्नोत्तरी प्रतियोगिता।

During this academic year, the Department of History conducted various events including lectures, workshops, heritage walks, visits to many monuments of historical importance, and several competitions which helped the students to enhance their historical knowledge and widened their cultural awareness by fostering critical thinking.

  • The department organised inaugural lecture on 5th October 2023 delivered by the distinguished Prof. Arvind Sinha, a luminary from the prestigious Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University on the topic “New Perspectives In Understanding The French Revolution.”
  • GYAAN ARJAN, a collaborative endeavour by Historia – The History Society and Minerva – The Quizzing Society was held on 28-29 November, This two-day intellectual extravaganza featured an enlightening session by Dr. Bhuwan Kumar Jha, Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Delhi on the topic ‘Congress, League and the Partition of India’ followed by a quiz competition on the following day.
  • HISTORIA organised an educational field trip to Bhopal from 26-30 January, 2024.
  • On February 28th, 2024 HISTORIA collaborated with the Centre for Shaheed Bhagat Singh Studies and Research to commemorate the death anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter, Chandrashekhar. The event paid tribute to his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the cause of Indian independence.
  • On March 7th 2024, Department of History under the aegis of IQAC, in collaboration with the Jammu Kashmir Study Centre, Delhi Chapter hosted a seminar titled “Viksit Bharat: Occupied Territories of Bharat – Our Land, Our People.” This thought-provoking event delved into the complex and multifaceted situation in the regions of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. The esteemed speaker for the session was Professor Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, former Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Himachal Pradesh and Advisor in the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • Historia under the aegis of IQAC, Viksit Bharat conducted the “Brahmi Script Workshop of Ancient Bharat” on March 18, 2024. Led by esteemed faculty and alumni of the Institute of Archaeology, ASI Shubham Kewaliya, the workshop aimed to provide students with invaluable insights into one of India’s oldest writing systems.
  • On April 11th 2024, Historia (The History Society), Department of History conducted a field trip to Rakhigarhi, the largest and one of the most significant archaeological site associated with the Indus Valley Civilization in India.

   

YUGANTAR: The Annual History Fest 2024 (April 22-23, 2024)

Every year the history department conducts its much-awaited cultural fest, “YUGATAR”. This year it was organised on 22nd & 23rd April. The event commenced with a lecture session delivered by the distinguished archaeologist, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Manjul, Additional-Director General, ASI. Following  this, several events took place concurrently, including an Open-Mic Competition, Photography Competition cum Exhibition, and a Quiz competition. On Day 2, the department organised a Heritage Walk to the Qutub Minar Complex, which was attended by around 40 students.

On 16th October 2023, the Department of Mathematics organised a talk on the topic ‘A Glimpse of India’s Achievements in Space Activities’ by Prof. Ram Krishna Sharma, Former Head of the Applied Mathematics Division at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center.

  • On 18th March 2024, the Department of Mathematics, as part of the Vikshit Bharat@2047 initiative, organised an invited talk on the topic ‘Tere Mere Beech ..’ by Prof. R. K. Sharma, ConsenSys Blockchain Chair Professor and Former Head of the Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
  • On the occasion of National Mathematics Day, the Mathematics Society presented a documentary on the life & achievements of great Indian Mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan- “The Man Who Knew Infinity”.
  • An Online Quiz and Presentation competition was successfully organised by The Mathematics Society on 7, 8, 11 February The event saw a large amount of participation by students from various colleges across the country.
  • The Mathematics Society of the Mathematics Department organised its annual intercollege festival ‘Ganitam’ on 13th April, 2024. The following events were organised:
    • Numeric Expedition- A Quiz Competition motivated the students to use their knowledge of mathematics in solving mind challenging quiz.
    • The Escape Room engaged the students in a thrilling challenge to solve intricate puzzles and find their way out of a room filled with mystery.
    • Analytica- Where students showcased their mathematical analysis skills by extracting insights from databases.
    • Some exciting rounds of Chess, Sudoku and Rubiks cube are also organised on Ganitam 2024.

 

Events

  • Political Science Association organised its first event, a lecture as a part of its “Distinguished Lecture Series Edition” on 01/11/2023. The lecture had the theme of “Systemic Causes of The Problems Facing China’s Economy in the New Era”, delivered by Dr. Pradeep Taneja, a Senior Lecturer in Asian Politics.
  • Political Science Association of the Department of Political Science in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Module, Centre for European Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University organised its second event, a quiz competition followed by a live streaming of a Panel Discussion on the topic “Europe in India’s Security Calculus” on 23/11/2023. The session included reputed personalities like Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of the European Parliament, Prof. Klaus Welle, former Secretary General of the European Parliament, Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, former Indian Ambassador to the European Union, and Prof. Harsh Pant.

  • The Department of Political Science, with 3 faculty members and 74 students, participated in the International Lecture Series: organised by Jean Monnet Module, Centre for European Studies, JNU, on 20.02.2024 where Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, Klaus Welle, Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Prof. Ummu Salma Bava and others spoke about the upcoming elections in the European Union, Mother of all Parliaments and shed light on the workings of democracy in large territories like India and the EU.
