Introduction

The Gandhi Study Circle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College aim to promote the study and application of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and principles among the younger generation. The circle delves into Gandhi’s writings, speeches and actions, and how they relate to contemporary issues and challenges. Gandhi’s role in the making of the Indian nation is truly unparalleled, as he was not only a freedom fighter but also a multifaceted individual, encompassing the roles of a theorist, philosopher, social reformer, lawyer, and saint. Mahatma Gandhi was a towering figure in India’s struggle for independence from British rule and he is fondly remembered as Gandhiji or Bapu. His philosophy of nonviolent resistance, Satyagraha, became a powerful tool in various civil rights movements across the globe. Gandhi’s leadership and commitment to nonviolence and truth inspired millions and played a crucial role in India’s attainment of independence. His principles of peace, tolerance, and social justice continue to be revered and studied worldwide.

Vision

The vision of a Gandhi Study Circle at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College typically centers around promoting the principles and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Here are some key elements that such a vision might include:

Mission

The mission of the Gandhi Study Circle is to cultivate and promote the principles of Mahatma Gandhi—non-violence, truth, self-discipline, equality, and simplicity—by fostering education, dialogue, and action within the community. Through dedicated efforts in education, advocacy, and community engagement, the circle aims to inspire individuals and groups to apply Gandhian values in their personal lives and collective efforts for social justice and sustainable development.

Objectives

  1. Academic Engagement:
    • Debates and Discussions: The Circle hosts debates and discussions on various aspects of Gandhi’s philosophy, encouraging critical thinking and diverse perspectives.
    • Workshops and Talks: These events feature scholars, historians, and experts who provide insights into Gandhi’s life and his enduring impact on various fields.
    • Screenings: Movies and documentaries related to Gandhi’s life, his struggles, and his philosophies are screened, providing a visual and narrative understanding of his legacy.
  2. Community Service:
    • Cleanliness Drives: In alignment with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, the Circle organizes cleanliness drives to promote hygiene and environmental consciousness among students and the community.
    • Environmental Campaigns: These campaigns aim to address environmental issues through activities like tree planting, waste management, and promoting sustainable practices.
  3. Thematic Focus Areas:
    • Non-Violence (Ahimsa): Exploring Gandhi’s principle of non-violence, its application in historical contexts, and its relevance in today’s world.
    • Self-Reliance (Swadeshi): Encouraging the concept of self-reliance through discussions on economic independence, local production, and sustainable living.

Events

Cleanliness Drive

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on 1st October 2023 under the theme “EK TAREEKH EK GHANTA- SWACHHATA HI SEWA HAI (Let’s make a difference together)” campaign the members of the Gandhi Study Circle participated in the cleanliness drive which was organised by the National Service Scheme, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. The cleanliness drive was held in the vicinity near the college premise from 10 am to 11 am. Our respected principal sir, Prof. Arun Kumar Attree addressed the students and also participated in the cleanliness drive. The moto of the cleanliness drive was to promote the importance of a hygienic environment. The students at the end of the drive realised how a clean nation can become a healthier nation.

Extempore Debate Competition

Gandhi Study Circle in collaboration with Sarvagya Hindi Debating society organised the event of “Extempore Debate Competition” on 8th November, 2023 under the theme “Gandhi and his Principles- Relevance in Today’s World.”  The enthusiastic students participated from different courses and colleges. The topics chosen for the competition were quite diverse ranging from political questions, environmental concerns, to the question of rights and freedoms in Indian context. The topics were attractive enough to make the debate engaging and informative.

Distinguished Lecture Series

Gandhi Study Circle in association with the Department of Political Science organised the second edition of “Distinguished Lecture Series” on November 28,2023 under the theme “Indian Constitutionalism: Gandhian Experiments”. The guest speaker for this lecture was Professor Ujjwal Kumar Singh from the Department of Political Science, University of Delhi. The speaker talked about the relevance of Gandhian values in contemporary times exemplifying the Gandhian values of equality, non-discrimination, Pluralism and justice that are reflected in the NEP 2020.

Educational Walk to Gandhi Smriti Museum

Gandhi Study Circle organised a visit-cum-heritage walk to Gandhi Smriti Museum, Tees January Marg with a group of 45 students for a guided tour, delving into the life and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi on 16 April 2024. The students after visiting the museum attempted a quick quiz competition which was organised by Gandhi Smriti itself. The memories of the day were also captured in group photographs.
